Nigeria is expected to hand over a disputed region over to Cameroon today, ending a 15-year dispute. Nigeria agreed to transfer the potentially oil and gas-rich Bakassi peninsula region to Cameroon two years ago, after having occupied a number of villages there in 1993, when the crisis began. For the last two years, the transfer process has been weighted down by obstacles such as political disagreements. Even now, last-minutes legal challenges and attacks by opposing local groups threaten the turnover. However, Nigeria's President has assured that will occur, and is using the event to showcase his nation's commitment to international law. An advisor to the Cameroon Prime Minister said that many projects are "in the pipeline" for the regained territory.
